Blog post from this day, 2008

Been time traveling, reading an old blog of mine. This one from July 2008. Not that long ago really but seems like another world and I'm definitely a vastly different person now.

The crop cracked beneath my feet and the earth did squelch as I made my way toward the shadowy mound ~. Midsummer's day, sometime before sunrise. Complete silence save for the occasional screech of an owl. Destination: Willy Howe, a large artificial hill constructed long ago for reasons unknown. Surriounded by a landscape of earthworks and monoliths, it forms a link in a chain which once joined this entire island in a cosmic vortex of interdimensional shamanic superhighways. IMO.

This shrine may not be as striking as Stonehenge, but it is more ancient and to me far more mysterious--the scar where the umbilical cord was once attached. With the ruined look of a spent volcano (the result of a devastating excavation) it sits alone now in a field, like an old lady's sagging boob. Nothing was discovered inside, no rich grave of a lost king, no fabulous bronze age treasure; but I hoped to uncover something this morning. An esoteric treasure invisible to the eyes of greedy men with spades.

I pushed my way to the top through the boskage, found a platform of turf beneath a gnarled old oak tree and sat there, my back against the cold, rough bark. The world had fallen completely silent. We were all waiting for the sun. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the moment and suddenly felt a total knob. A fool on a hill! Did I think I was Derek Acora or summat? Heheh. Uh.

THen a crow shrieked in the branches above and I almost jumped out of my skin. A rustle of wings and it sailed silently down in front of me. As I followed its silhouette I noticed the floor was carpeted in a low mist. The crops had disappeared completely and it seemed as though I'd become stranded on an island in the middle of an enchanted sea.

More birds began to sing and before long the dawn chorus was in full, deafening swing. THe sky was brightening. A clear day, not a cloud in the sky. Suddenly, the horizon began to glow intensely and I felt sure that the trees and barns would burst into flame right there beneaththesun. Huge shafts of light began streaking upwards.

The mothership had come. Somebody signed my release. Who's she gonna claim this time? I'd never seen a sunrise like this, and I was part of it. Wrapped in rays of light. Sat at the foot of this wise old tree, wondering what the crop would yield. An idiot drowning in sky and birdsong. Laughing at it all, loving it. Thrown upwards at 45 degrees.
